Monday: I pick up all 4 newspapers during the week but don't read them until Thursday and it was interesting to see how articles about the swine flu got bigger and bigger and then BAM front page news worthy. I think the best part about these articles are when they make maps to show how many cases have been reported - just from Monday to Thursday the maps have gotten bigger and the numbers increased dramatically. I really can't believe this is happening to our world. Talk about a reality check. / The article about the government handing out masks everywhere? I mean, really, what will a mask do against a new deadly flu virus that has taken only days to spread world-wide? UGH it's so creepy to think about.
Tuesday: The swine flu has made it to the front page but only a side bar. I like how Obama is handling it though - saying that it's cause for concern but not panic; way to mark the nearing of his 100th day in office! / That picture certainly caught my attention; there's a plane in the sky... flying (what looks like) into a building. Hmm. Made me remember how much I forgot about September 11 and how the presence of terrorists are still very real even if we aren't impacted by their actions everyday.
Wednesday: The article on the front page about the poppy fields in Afghanistan is kind of sad. I mean, these farmers work so hard to plant these crops and care for them - it says in the article that this is one of the biggest incomes for Afghanistan and the damn Taliban are going in and ruining it. I think that's terrible - in a state with such turmoil everywhere people are trying to turn their lives around; this is what's happening to all their hard work? Ugh. Not okay. But at the same time - drugs aren't the way to go to start a life - but I think it will be too hard for the US to go into every poppy field and destroy it so.. I don't know how I feel about it - I don't think its the right way to go about changing the country. / The picture of Edgar Hernandez, the first case of the swine flu this year, he seems so innocent. All these articles about the swine flu are A) freaking scary.. and B) just like the ongoing articles and side bars we've been doing in class about JAWS. It's neat to see it in action in the paper but terrible what the topic is about..
Thursday: I'm not even looking at anything unless it has something about the swine flu in the title. Honestly. It's now a world-wide pandemic. I was watching the news the other night and seeing all the news about this flu was like I was watching a horror movie - real real. I'm not sure if you've ever seen that 90's movie about the monkey disease that went into humans and killed half the world population? Well I saw that as a kid and was scarred ever since.. although this isn't nearly as graphic.. or terrible.. it reminded me of it. Scary thought. / The war photography found from the Spanish Civil War was a cool article. It was refreshing to read amongst all the swine flu. / I then went directly to page A14 to read the rest of the articles and side bars about the swine flu. I want to know as much as I can about this unknown sickness that's doubling in cases everyday.

Village Beach Shark Attack
In a press conference held earlier today in response to the deaths of 10 year old Alex Kintner and 16 year old Wendy Watson, Mayor Bob Farley announced that the shark responsible for these deaths was killed by a local fisherman this morning.
Alex Kintner was killed by a shark early in the afternoon yesterday while playing in the water with his friends. His body was not recovered. 16 year old Wendy Watson’s severely mauled body washed up on shore earlier this week and the reason for her death is speculated to be linked to that same shark.
Mayor Farley brought in world famous shark expert, Mad Hooper, to verify that this shark is the shark responsible for these deaths.
“We know that this is the right shark,” said Farley. “I doubt there is another beast like this in these waters.”
Hooper investigated the body of the shark when it was brought to shore and deemed it to be a Nurse Shark, one of the most dangerous of all sharks.
In response to these events, Farley announced there will be extra presence of shark spotters on beaches for this Fourth of July celebration and people should to carry on normally as the beaches are deemed safe.
In a press release from Police Chief Martin Brody it states that residents should not be alarmed at the sight of these extra precautionary armed forces and they are only there to put tourists and residents alike at ease.
Farley said there is always a possibility of another shark out in the waters but he doubts it.
“We just want everyone to be comfortable and not worry,” said Farley.
In response to how this shark was verified to be the shark responsible for the deaths of the two victims Farley had this to say, “We didn’t look for human remains because we thought it would be very disrespectful to both the dead people and the dead people’s families” Before Farley exits the conference, he points to a picture of a bloodied open mouth of a shark, “We just know that this is the one.”
Down at the beach it was a crowded day as families soaked up as much sun as they could in the water and on the sand.
In an impromptu interview at the beach, Farley said, “I’m pleased and happy to repeat the news that we’ve caught the predator that killed the two young people. As you can see people are happy here.”
As he spoke these words, an alarming whistle was blown from the lifeguard station and a booming voice over a mega phone could be heard saying, “GET OUT OF THE WATER”.
As people we’re fleeing for their lives, rescue boats we’re coming closer to shore.
Moments later it was deemed to be two young children with a cardboard fin playing a trick on the beach goers.
It looks like the only real trouble seen on today’s Fourth of July was the consequences of these childish acts.

NYT April 20 - 23
Monday:Is it just me or does the paper seem to be getting smaller and smaller? Size-wise? I really feel like it was bulkier in the beginning of the year... maybe it's all in my head!! The picture on the first page is so emotionally moving. The caption is such an understatement of what is probably going on in the picture. He's running for cover, running to save his life. Also the other picture of that article in the following pages; that is so moving as well. I know I say this every post but I really can't believe the pictures that make it into newspapers - so personal. / The article about the horse in Hungray bringing back hope(?) to their country was really uplifting. It's like.. hard to describe but everyone has been there personally; thinking you've hit rock bottom but something little gives you hope. I really enjoyed it.
Tuesday: The article on the Chinese government "asking" citizens to change names so it will become easier to scan identification cards is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous! The solutions China comes to sometimes are absurd.. I think that is just... not okay! I felt the rest of the paper wasn't too interesting; that or nothing caught my eye enough.
Wednesday: Wait.. so the drug cartel goes all the way through Latin America into South America? And it's endangering indigenous tribes? Um... why is this becoming a stronger force? Why aren't they being stopped in their tracks? I guess that's the same as asking why is there corruption in this world.. I thought the housing crisis article was interesting. I've been hearing all over the news on television that the housing market is picking up but when I looked at the statistics and read this article.. it's really not going as well as everyone's said. Weird how information that huge can be skewed and interpreted differently.
Thursday: David B. Kellermann's suicide is awful. All we hear in the news these days are people taking their lives and lives of loved ones around them because they feel they have nothing left. And in this case he had too much left and too much responsibility. This recession is bringing out the worst in people. The article about 50 crossing the line, and how many lines are there to cross; um why isn't he behind bars? I swear, rap is a cult; kind of like the good 'ol boy network. They can get away with anything! And this article proves just that... unfortunately.
